People complain about having to haul around their luggage when travelling, but no one knows this struggle more than wheelchair users. For those who don’t have their own wheelchair accessible vehicle, or if they are travelling long distances, a plane is usually the best option. But getting around a crowded airport is enough of a challenge for wheelchair users, let alone having to navigate the terminal with one or more bags rolling behind them.
Thankfully, there is a at least one person who has tackled this challenge head on.
Personal Luggage for the Wheelchair User
If you are eager to support the development of a great piece of luggage for wheelchair users, check out the Kickstarter page of Andrew Slorance from Forres, UK. Slorance is the founder of Phoenix Instinct, a Scotland based company that is in the process of developing what they call the “the ultimate travel bag.”
Side note: if the name Andrew Slorance sounds familiar to you, it’s because he was the brains behind the Carbon Black wheelchair, a sleek new wheelchair design that launched less than two years ago.
It appears that inventing wheelchair accessible items is a bit of a natural talent for Slorance, who has now set his sights on creating wheelchair-compatible luggage that is designed with inclusivity in mind.
About the Phoenix Instinct Luggage
The Phoenix Instinct Luggage is fully wheelchair compatible. It has specialized wheels that allow it to turn 360 degrees, making it easy to maneuver while attached to a wheelchair. The special design of the wheels make it easy to navigate and even traverse over rough terrain and around obstacles. The bag hooks nicely up to the back of a wheelchair, although it can really be used by anyone.
According to the website, each bag will cost about $293, which is actually pretty comparable in price to a lot of decent pieces of luggage.
Take a look at the bag in action in this video.
Support the Development
As of writing this, the Phoenix Instinct Luggage Kickstarter page has gathered $14,946, only $4,054 dollars short of its $19,000 goal. If you have some extra money, you can donate to their cause of making the luggage available to all.
